How the Typing Leaderboard Rankings Work
The Global Typing Leaderboard on TypingPractices ranks typists by words per minute (WPM) from the free 60-second Global Typing Championship. A higher WPM means a higher position. Every ranked result must also meet the minimum accuracy requirement, so the list rewards speed and precision together rather than fast, error-filled typing.
Because every participant types the same type of English passage for the same amount of time, the comparison is fair for beginners, students, professionals and competitive typists alike.
How WPM is calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute. By standard convention, every five correctly typed characters (including spaces) count as one word.
Example: if you type 250 correct characters in 60 seconds, that is 250 รท 5 = 50 words in one minute, so your speed is 50 WPM.
How accuracy is calculated
Accuracy is the percentage of characters you typed correctly out of everything you typed. Typing 95 correct characters out of 100 gives 95% accuracy. The Global Typing Championship requires at least 80% accuracy for a result to count.
What Is a Good Typing Speed? WPM Benchmarks
Use this guide to see how your score compares. These are general benchmarks for English typing, so your goal should be steady improvement rather than a single number.
| Level | Speed (WPM) | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Below 30 | Still learning key positions; focus on accuracy. |
| Average | 30 โ 45 | Typical for most adults using a keyboard daily. |
| Good | 45 โ 60 | Comfortable for office, study and most typing jobs. |
| Advanced | 60 โ 80 | Above average; strong touch-typing technique. |
| Professional | 80 โ 100 | Excellent; suited to data entry, transcription and writing roles. |
| Elite | 100+ | Competitive level; consistent speed with high accuracy. |
6 Proven Tips to Climb the Typing Leaderboard
Reaching the top is about consistent practice and good technique. These habits help most.
Accuracy first
Every mistake costs time. Slow down slightly until errors drop, then build speed.
Use all ten fingers
Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and return to it after each key.
Eyes on the screen
Avoid looking at the keyboard. Touch typing builds muscle memory much faster.
Practice daily
Short daily sessions of 10 to 15 minutes beat one long weekly session.
Set up your posture
Sit upright, relax your shoulders and keep your wrists level with the keyboard.
Keep a steady rhythm
Consistent flow is faster than bursts and pauses. Don't stop to fix every small slip.
